Team Captains
We know that leading your Red Rock Team takes some effort. That is why our RRR Captains get the VIP treatment! Here are a few reasons why you may want to think about putting a team together…
- • After registering you will receive the “RRR welcome package” complete with a RRR technical running hat and other fun stuff!
- • At race check-in you will receive a Red Rock Relay hoody sweatshirt
- • The ability to choose teammates (non-annoying ones☺) and running legs (the prettiest ones☺).
- • The respect and POWER you will yield as the team boss & watching the team YOU helped create have the running experience of a lifetime. Don’t be surprised if they hoist you on their shoulders, chant your name, and carry you through the finish line.
12 Steps To Making Your Team
- 1. Unless you are a X country coach you likely don’t know 11 other runners who are instantly ready to run. We suggest sitting down and writing out a list of active people you like and who would have fun doing something crazy like this. (Remember the running leg assignments fit runners of all abilities and this may be chance to help a friend in their fitness goals).
- 2. Find a chance to talk to each potential runner and invite them to join your team. Some will say yes, do a cart wheel, and give you a bear hug. Some will have to say no because of Grandma Vera’s 50th birthday party that weekend. Just don’t be alarmed if they walk away in tears.
- 3. If you can gather a team of 12 this way great! Likely, you will end up with more spots to fill. If so, choose some your existing members to invite their friends too. You will end up with a team of 12 in no time.
- 4. Choose your most responsible team member to be co-captain. They can help you gather registration funds, organize travel, and anything else you might need.
- 5. Set a firm date by which you want to register and begin collecting entry fees from members of the team. We can provide RRR team member invoice statements to help you collect. Your team members will be more committed to their training and the event once they fill out an entry form and pay their share of fees.
- 6. Make your team name! Be creative not crude. You can do this as a democracy with team input or as a monarchy, “I hereby decree as team captain that our name will be the JELLY BELLYS!
- 7. Set up a team blog, facebook group, email chain etc. This will help you communicate with team members and generate excitement for the Red Rock event! We will communicate mostly with you so you will need to have a system set up for getting them informed about any race news.
- 8. Make a plan for the two Team Vehicles. Most ideally they should be vans or large SUV’s. You may be able to find them amongst team members or you may have to rent one. Recruit your race volunteers from the team as well.
- 9. Consider your team uniforms. You can use the tech shirts we provide or you can create something more unique for you. Matching uni’s help everyone feel together and unified! We also give an award for best team outfits. Yes, this is your chance to run a pink tu tu!
- 10. Make sure both vehicles are packed with adequate liquids, food, and basic first aid. Remember that your “snow” and “sun” vans need to be 100% self supported. Your co-captain can help with this as well.
- 11. Keep track of all additional team bills you might incur like gas, rental fees, hotels, uniforms, food etc. then divide it up accordingly. 99% of team members are happy to pay their share, they just need expectations laid out for them.
- 12. If for some reason, you lose a team member and need to find another just use the RRR forum link or Red Rock Relay facebook group.
Congrats “El Capitan” you now have a team in the best relay on the planet!
